The first reading rehearsal for production under a working title The Heavenly Empire, stage directed by Jernej Lorenci, took place in the Theatre’s Library on 14th June. This is a joint production between the National Theatre and BITEF (Belgrade International Theatre Festival).
The premiere is planned to take place on 26th September, on the closing evening of the 51st BITEF, one of the most renowned regional, European and international theatre festivals.
Jernej Lorenci, a recognized Slovene stage director, dramaturge, set designer and pedagogue, has set out to create the play after motifs from Serbian epic poetry.
Lorenci says that he is very pleased to work with Serbian actors for the first time and that he was drawn to this project by the beauty and strength of Serbian epic poetry, which is the kind of literature he has been quite interested in theatre recently.
The theme he is most interested in this literature is the constant identity oscillation between the position of a hero and the position of a victim, since there is not much chance to assume a middle ground or balanced position.
